Summary
SNRIs impair platelet serotonin uptake and, with NSAIDs such as naproxen, increase the risk of bleeding, especially gastrointestinal bleeding. The risk is higher in older adults and those with prior GI bleeding.
What this interaction means in plain words
Levomilnacipran and Naproxen can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.
Levomilnacipran belongs to Central Nervous System; Naproxen belongs to Musculoskeletal.
Why it happens
Reduced platelet serotonin content from SNRI therapy adds to NSAID-induced platelet inhibition and mucosal injury.
What to do
Monitor for signs of bleeding and consider a proton pump inhibitor in high-risk patients. Use the lowest effective NSAID dose or prefer paracetamol.
What to ask your pharmacist
- Should I take them at different times of day?
- Does the dose of either medicine need to change?
- Is there anything I should avoid, such as alcohol or certain foods, while on both?
