Summary

Linezolid is a reversible non-selective MAO inhibitor, and procarbazine also has weak MAO-inhibiting activity. Together they can raise central serotonergic and adrenergic activity, with a risk of serotonin syndrome (agitation, hyperthermia, clonus, autonomic instability) and hypertensive reactions.

What this interaction means in plain words

Linezolid and Procarbazine can interact in a way that may be serious. Using them together is sometimes necessary, but it needs a deliberate decision by the prescriber, a plan for monitoring, and clear advice on the warning signs to watch for.

Linezolid belongs to Anti Bacterial; Procarbazine belongs to Oncology.

Evidence level: Low

Why it happens

Additive MAO inhibition leading to excess synaptic serotonin and catecholamines.

What to do

Prefer an alternative antibacterial where possible. If linezolid is essential, monitor closely for serotonin toxicity and blood pressure changes during and for about two weeks after the combination.

What to ask your pharmacist

  • Does the benefit of taking both outweigh the risk in my case?
  • Do I need any blood test, ECG or other check while on both?
  • What early warning signs should I watch for, and what should I do if they appear?
