Summary
Meloxicam can blunt the blood pressure lowering effect of losartan and, together with it, can impair renal function, especially in older or volume-depleted patients. Hyperkalemia may also occur.
What this interaction means in plain words
Losartan and Meloxicam can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.
Losartan belongs to Cardiovascular; Meloxicam belongs to Musculoskeletal.
Why it happens
NSAIDs inhibit vasodilatory renal prostaglandins, reducing glomerular perfusion while angiotensin receptor blockade removes efferent arteriolar tone, reducing filtration and potassium excretion.
What to do
Ensure adequate hydration and monitor blood pressure, serum creatinine and potassium after starting or changing the NSAID. Use the shortest, lowest-dose NSAID course possible.
What to ask your pharmacist
- Should I take them at different times of day?
- Does the dose of either medicine need to change?
- Is there anything I should avoid, such as alcohol or certain foods, while on both?
