Summary
Naproxen can blunt the blood pressure lowering effect of losartan and, together with it, may impair renal function, especially in elderly or volume-depleted patients. Potassium may also rise.
What this interaction means in plain words
Losartan and Naproxen can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.
Losartan belongs to Cardiovascular; Naproxen belongs to Musculoskeletal.
Why it happens
NSAIDs reduce vasodilatory renal prostaglandins and, combined with angiotensin receptor blockade, lower glomerular filtration pressure and impair potassium excretion.
What to do
Monitor blood pressure, serum creatinine and potassium after starting naproxen and keep the patient well hydrated. Use the shortest NSAID course possible or an alternative analgesic in high-risk patients.
What to ask your pharmacist
- Should I take them at different times of day?
- Does the dose of either medicine need to change?
- Is there anything I should avoid, such as alcohol or certain foods, while on both?
