Summary

Lumefantrine is a CYP2D6 inhibitor and methamphetamine is partly metabolised by CYP2D6, so exposure to methamphetamine could rise. This may increase sympathomimetic effects such as hypertension, tachycardia and agitation. The clinical effect is modest and is likely to be limited for a short antimalarial course.

What this interaction means in plain words

Lumefantrine and Methamphetamine can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.

Evidence level: Low

Why it happens

Lumefantrine inhibits CYP2D6, reducing the metabolism of methamphetamine.

What to do

Monitor blood pressure, heart rate and symptoms of stimulant excess during the antimalarial course. Reduce the methamphetamine dose if adverse effects appear.
