Summary
Measles vaccine is a live attenuated vaccine, and in a patient with B-cell depletion the vaccine virus may cause disease while the immune response is also impaired.
What this interaction means in plain words
Measles vaccine and Ocrelizumab are not normally used together. Taking them at the same time is expected to cause harm or make one of them unsafe, so a different medicine is usually chosen for one of the two.
Why it happens
Ocrelizumab-induced immunosuppression permits replication of live attenuated vaccine virus and reduces the vaccine response.
What to do
Do not give live vaccines during ocrelizumab therapy or until B-cell repletion. Give live vaccines at least 4 weeks before starting ocrelizumab when needed.
What to ask your pharmacist
- Is there an alternative to one of these two medicines for me?
- If both are essential, who is monitoring me and how often?
- Which symptoms mean I should stop and seek help straight away?
