Summary

Halogenated inhaled anesthetics sensitise the myocardium to catecholamines, and amphetamines increase catecholamine activity. Together they may cause ventricular arrhythmias and hypertension. Methoxyflurane is also nephrotoxic, which adds to the concern.

What this interaction means in plain words

Methamphetamine and Methoxyflurane can interact in a way that may be serious. Using them together is sometimes necessary, but it needs a deliberate decision by the prescriber, a plan for monitoring, and clear advice on the warning signs to watch for.

Evidence level: Low

Why it happens

Pharmacodynamic: myocardial sensitisation to catecholamines by methoxyflurane plus sympathomimetic stimulation from methamphetamine.

What to do

Avoid methoxyflurane in patients who have recently taken methamphetamine, and choose another analgesic or anesthetic. If it cannot be avoided, monitor ECG and blood pressure continuously.

What to ask your pharmacist

  • Does the benefit of taking both outweigh the risk in my case?
  • Do I need any blood test, ECG or other check while on both?
  • What early warning signs should I watch for, and what should I do if they appear?
