Summary
Procarbazine has monoamine oxidase inhibiting activity, and MAOIs combined with methylphenidate can cause hypertensive crisis. Labeling for methylphenidate contraindicates use with MAOIs or within 14 days of stopping them.
What this interaction means in plain words
Methylphenidate and Procarbazine are not normally used together. Taking them at the same time is expected to cause harm or make one of them unsafe, so a different medicine is usually chosen for one of the two.
Methylphenidate belongs to Central Nervous System; Procarbazine belongs to Oncology.
Why it happens
MAO inhibition by procarbazine leads to excess catecholamine accumulation, exaggerating methylphenidate's sympathomimetic effect.
What to do
Avoid the combination and do not give methylphenidate within 14 days of procarbazine. Use a non-stimulant alternative.
