Summary
Combining corticosteroids with salicylates increases the risk of gastrointestinal irritation, ulceration and bleeding. Corticosteroids may also lower salicylate levels, and salicylate levels may rise when the steroid is withdrawn.
What this interaction means in plain words
Methylprednisolone and Salicylates can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.
Why it happens
Additive gastrointestinal mucosal injury, together with corticosteroid-enhanced salicylate clearance.
What to do
Use the lowest effective doses for the shortest duration and consider gastroprotection with a proton pump inhibitor in at-risk patients. Monitor for GI bleeding and for salicylate effect when the steroid dose changes.
What to ask your pharmacist
- Should I take them at different times of day?
- Does the dose of either medicine need to change?
- Is there anything I should avoid, such as alcohol or certain foods, while on both?
