Summary
Moxonidine is a centrally acting antihypertensive that can cause sedation and dry mouth, and trimipramine is strongly sedating with alpha-blocking and hypotensive properties. Combined use may increase drowsiness and hypotension. Tricyclics may also blunt the antihypertensive effect of centrally acting alpha-agonists.
What this interaction means in plain words
Moxonidine and Trimipramine can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.
Why it happens
Additive CNS depression and hypotension, with possible pharmacodynamic antagonism of central alpha2/imidazoline agonism by tricyclic noradrenaline reuptake inhibition.
What to do
Monitor blood pressure and sedation after starting or adjusting either drug. Adjust the antihypertensive regimen if blood pressure control is lost or orthostatic symptoms occur.
What to ask your pharmacist
- Should I take them at different times of day?
- Does the dose of either medicine need to change?
- Is there anything I should avoid, such as alcohol or certain foods, while on both?
