Summary
Mycophenolic acid glucuronide and ganciclovir are both renally eliminated, and in renal impairment competition for tubular secretion may raise concentrations of both. Both drugs also cause neutropenia, so their toxicity is additive.
What this interaction means in plain words
Mycophenolate mofetil and Valganciclovir can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.
Mycophenolate mofetil belongs to Miscellaneous; Valganciclovir belongs to Anti Virals.
Why it happens
Competition for renal tubular secretion plus additive myelosuppression.
What to do
Monitor complete blood counts closely, especially in patients with reduced renal function. Adjust valganciclovir dose to renal function and reduce or interrupt either drug if neutropenia develops.
