Summary

Nonselective beta-blockers like nadolol can blunt the adrenergic warning symptoms of hypoglycemia such as tremor and palpitations, and may delay glucose recovery. They can also modestly impair glycemic control, so hypoglycemia on a sulfonylurea may go unrecognized.

What this interaction means in plain words

Nadolol and Tolazamide can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.

Nadolol belongs to Cardiovascular; Tolazamide belongs to Endocrine.

Evidence level: Moderate

Why it happens

Beta-adrenergic blockade masks hypoglycemia symptoms and inhibits glycogenolysis-mediated recovery.

What to do

Monitor blood glucose more often and counsel patients that sweating may be the main remaining warning sign. Consider a cardioselective beta-blocker if clinically appropriate.

What to ask your pharmacist

  • Should I take them at different times of day?
