Summary
Procarbazine has weak monoamine oxidase inhibitor activity and, with a triptan, may raise the risk of serotonin syndrome or hypertensive reactions. Naratriptan is not metabolized mainly by MAO-A, so the risk is mostly theoretical.
What this interaction means in plain words
Naratriptan and Procarbazine can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.
Naratriptan belongs to Central Nervous System; Procarbazine belongs to Oncology.
Why it happens
Procarbazine's MAO inhibition combined with serotonergic triptan activity may increase serotonergic toxicity.
What to do
Monitor for agitation, tremor, hyperthermia, clonus and blood pressure changes after the combination is started. Use a non-serotonergic migraine treatment if possible.
What to ask your pharmacist
- Should I take them at different times of day?
- Does the dose of either medicine need to change?
- Is there anything I should avoid, such as alcohol or certain foods, while on both?
