Summary

Ozanimod's active metabolites are formed partly via MAO-B, and inhibition may change exposure and could allow nonselective MAO inhibition. Hypertensive crisis is a theoretical risk, and the clinical interaction has not been fully studied.

What this interaction means in plain words

Ozanimod and Safinamide are not normally used together. Taking them at the same time is expected to cause harm or make one of them unsafe, so a different medicine is usually chosen for one of the two.

Ozanimod belongs to Central Nervous System; Safinamide belongs to Central Nervous System.

Evidence level: Low

Why it happens

MAO-B inhibition alters formation of ozanimod's active metabolites, which may also inhibit MAO, creating a risk of excess adrenergic stimulation.

What to do

Avoid concurrent use as per ozanimod labeling. Allow at least 14 days between stopping one and starting the other.

What to ask your pharmacist
