Summary

Procarbazine has MAO-inhibiting activity, which can raise sumatriptan exposure since it is metabolized by MAO-A. This may cause excessive vasoconstriction and serotonin toxicity.

What this interaction means in plain words

Procarbazine and Sumatriptan are not normally used together. Taking them at the same time is expected to cause harm or make one of them unsafe, so a different medicine is usually chosen for one of the two.

Procarbazine belongs to Oncology; Sumatriptan belongs to Central Nervous System.

Evidence level: Moderate

Why it happens

MAO inhibition reduces sumatriptan metabolism and increases serotonergic activity.

What to do

Avoid sumatriptan during and for 2 weeks after procarbazine; use a non-serotonergic migraine therapy.
