Summary
Rifapentine is an inducer of CYP3A4 and CYP2C8 and may markedly lower repaglinide exposure. This can cause hyperglycemia and loss of diabetes control.
What this interaction means in plain words
Repaglinide and Rifapentine can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.
Repaglinide belongs to Endocrine; Rifapentine belongs to Anti Bacterial.
Why it happens
Rifapentine induces CYP3A4 and CYP2C8, increasing repaglinide metabolism.
What to do
Monitor blood glucose frequently and increase the repaglinide dose as needed. Reduce the dose and monitor for hypoglycemia after rifapentine is stopped.
What to ask your pharmacist
- Should I take them at different times of day?
- Does the dose of either medicine need to change?
- Is there anything I should avoid, such as alcohol or certain foods, while on both?
