For healthcare professionals — reference only. This page is a brief summary, not medical advice and not a substitute for official labeling or clinical judgement. Always verify before prescribing or dispensing.

Summary

Rizatriptan is metabolized mainly by monoamine oxidase A, and MAO inhibition raises its exposure substantially; rizatriptan labeling contraindicates use with MAOIs or within two weeks of stopping them. Transdermal selegiline at antidepressant doses inhibits MAO nonselectively, so the combination adds a risk of serotonin syndrome to higher triptan levels.

What this interaction means in plain words

Rizatriptan and Selegiline transdermal are not normally used together. Taking them at the same time is expected to cause harm or make one of them unsafe, so a different medicine is usually chosen for one of the two.

Evidence level: High

Why it happens

Inhibition of MAO-A reduces rizatriptan metabolism and adds to serotonergic effects.

What to do

Avoid the combination and do not give rizatriptan within two weeks of stopping selegiline. Use a non-triptan acute migraine treatment.
