Summary

Zolmitriptan and its active metabolite are cleared partly by MAO-A, so MAO inhibition may raise exposure. Combined with serotonergic effects, this raises the risk of serotonin syndrome.

What this interaction means in plain words

Selegiline and Zolmitriptan can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.

Selegiline belongs to Central Nervous System; Zolmitriptan belongs to Central Nervous System.

Evidence level: Low

Why it happens

Reduced MAO-A metabolism of zolmitriptan and additive serotonergic activity.

What to do

Keep zolmitriptan at the lowest effective dose and monitor for serotonin toxicity. Avoid the combination with nonselective-dose or transdermal selegiline.

What to ask your pharmacist
