Summary

Vorinostat has been associated with QT prolongation, and thioridazine markedly prolongs QTc. The combination may increase the risk of torsades de pointes, particularly with electrolyte disturbances common in oncology patients.

What this interaction means in plain words

Thioridazine and Vorinostat are not normally used together. Taking them at the same time is expected to cause harm or make one of them unsafe, so a different medicine is usually chosen for one of the two.

Thioridazine belongs to Central Nervous System; Vorinostat belongs to Oncology.

Evidence level: Moderate

Why it happens

Additive effects on cardiac repolarization leading to QT prolongation.

What to do

Avoid combining; use an alternative antipsychotic. If vorinostat is essential, correct potassium and magnesium and do not use thioridazine.

What to ask your pharmacist
