Summary
Systemic corticosteroids and loop diuretics both increase renal potassium loss, so combined use can cause hypokalemia. Low potassium can provoke arrhythmias, especially in patients taking digoxin or QT-prolonging drugs.
What this interaction means in plain words
Torsemide and Triamcinolone can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.
Torsemide belongs to Cardiovascular; Triamcinolone belongs to Endocrine.
Why it happens
Additive renal potassium wasting from loop diuretic action and mineralocorticoid activity of the corticosteroid.
What to do
Monitor serum potassium and magnesium and replace as needed, particularly with repeated or high-dose triamcinolone.
What to ask your pharmacist
- Should I take them at different times of day?
