Grossesse et allaitement

Grossesse
Unsafe Tetracyclines can stain the baby's teeth and affect bone growth once tooth mineralisation starts (about 15 to 16 weeks), and high doses have caused liver toxicity in pregnant women. Avoid oral or injected oxytetracycline in pregnancy; use a safer antibiotic. Skin or eye use gives little absorption.
Allaitement
Safe Labels advise avoiding breastfeeding. LactMed is more reassuring: milk levels are low and milk calcium limits absorption, so short courses are probably acceptable; avoid prolonged or repeated courses. Watch the infant for rash, diarrhoea or thrush.

Effets indésirables signalés

  • Nausea
  • Anorexia
  • Anemia
  • Thrombocytopenia
  • Increased BUN (dose-related)

Précautions particulières

  • Absorption is adversely affected by milk, antacids and aluminium, calcium, iron, magnesium and zinc salts.
  • Tetracyclines depress plasma prothrombin activity, therefore reduced dosages of concurrent anticoagulants may be required.
  • Special care should be taken when treating the elderly.
