Indications
Mécanisme d'action
Inhibits bacterial protein synthesis by binding with 30S and possibly 50S ribosomal subunit(s)
Posologie adulte habituelle (résumé de la notice)
Chronic Bronchitis, Acute Exacerbation (Usual daily dose): 500 mg PO q12hr or 250 mg PO q6hr (ie, 1000 mg/day)
Grossesse et allaitement
- Grossesse
- Unsafe Tetracyclines can permanently stain the baby's teeth and affect bone growth once tooth mineralisation starts (about 15-16 weeks), and high doses have caused serious liver toxicity in pregnant women. Avoid in pregnancy; use a safer antibiotic. Skin or eye use gives little absorption.
- Allaitement
- Safe Labels advise avoiding breastfeeding. LactMed is more reassuring: milk levels are low and milk calcium limits absorption, so short courses are probably acceptable; avoid prolonged or repeated courses. Watch the infant for rash, diarrhoea or thrush.
Effets indésirables signalés
- Nausea
- Anorexia
- Hemolytic anemia
- Permanent discoloration of teeth
- Increased BUN (dose-related)
Contre-indications
- Documented hypersensitivity
- Severe hepatic dysfunction
- Pregnancy 2nd and 3rd trimesters
Précautions particulières
- Consider drug serum level determinations in prolonged therapy
- Antianabolic action of the tetracyclines may cause an increase in BUN; in patients with significantly impaired renal function.
- Intracranial hypertension (IH, pseudotumor cerebri) has been associated with the use of tetracyclines
