Sintesi
Ciprofloxacin reduces theophylline clearance and can raise serum theophylline concentrations substantially in some patients. This can lead to nausea, tachycardia, arrhythmias and seizures. Elderly patients, those with high baseline levels, liver disease or heart failure, and smokers who stop are at greater risk.
Cosa significa questa interazione in parole semplici
Ciprofloxacin and Theophylline can interact in a way that may be serious. Using them together is sometimes necessary, but it needs a deliberate decision by the prescriber, a plan for monitoring, and clear advice on the warning signs to watch for.
Ciprofloxacin belongs to Anti Bacterial; Theophylline belongs to Respiratory.
Perché avviene
Ciprofloxacin inhibits CYP1A2, the main enzyme metabolising theophylline, decreasing its clearance.
Cosa fare
Prefer an antibiotic that does not inhibit CYP1A2. If ciprofloxacin is needed, measure theophylline levels before and during therapy and reduce the theophylline dose empirically.
