Third-generation cephalosporin with broad-spectrum gram-negative activity, including Pseudomonas; has lower efficacy against gram-positive organisms and higher efficacy against resistant organisms; arrests bacterial growth by binding to 1 or more penicillin-binding proteins.

- Safe Crosses the placenta; cephalosporins are widely used in pregnancy with no increase in birth defects. Considered a safe choice for serious infections.

- Safe Passes into milk in low amounts. Compatible with breastfeeding; watch the infant for loose stools, rash or thrush.

- Use with caution in patients with history of seizure disorder (especially in renal impairment, where drug levels may increase significantly)
