Resumo
Brimonidine labelling forbids use with MAO inhibitors, and tranylcypromine is an irreversible non-selective MAO inhibitor. Systemic absorption of the alpha-2 agonist could lead to unpredictable blood-pressure changes, and the effect on catecholamine handling is poorly characterised.
O que esta interação significa em palavras simples
Brimonidine and Tranylcypromine are not normally used together. Taking them at the same time is expected to cause harm or make one of them unsafe, so a different medicine is usually chosen for one of the two.
Brimonidine belongs to Miscellaneous; Tranylcypromine belongs to Central Nervous System.
Por que acontece
Uncertain: MAO inhibition may alter handling of circulating amines and potentiate systemic alpha-2 agonist cardiovascular effects
O que fazer
Avoid brimonidine in patients taking tranylcypromine; use a different intraocular-pressure-lowering agent such as a prostaglandin analogue or beta-blocker where appropriate.
O que perguntar ao farmacêutico
- Is there an alternative to one of these two medicines for me?
- If both are essential, who is monitoring me and how often?
- Which symptoms mean I should stop and seek help straight away?
