Summary

Calcium can in theory antagonize the effect of calcium channel blockers, and hypercalcemia may reduce their antihypertensive effect. At usual supplemental doses with normal calcium levels, clinically significant loss of effect is uncommon.

What this interaction means in plain words

Amlodipine and Calcium carbonate have a small, usually unimportant interaction. Most people can take both; the pharmacist may still mention it so that any unexpected effect is recognised.

Amlodipine belongs to Cardiovascular; Calcium carbonate belongs to Gastrointestinal Tract.

Evidence level: Low

Why it happens

Elevated extracellular calcium may pharmacodynamically oppose L-type calcium channel blockade.

What to do

No routine change is needed; monitor blood pressure if high-dose calcium or vitamin D is started and check serum calcium if response is lost.
