Summary
Carbamazepine is a potent CYP3A4 inducer and can lower amlodipine exposure. The antihypertensive or antianginal effect of amlodipine may be reduced, and the effect can fade over several weeks as induction develops.
What this interaction means in plain words
Amlodipine and Carbamazepine can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.
Amlodipine belongs to Cardiovascular; Carbamazepine belongs to Central Nervous System.
Why it happens
Carbamazepine induces CYP3A4, increasing amlodipine metabolism.
What to do
Monitor blood pressure and symptoms after starting or stopping carbamazepine, and increase the amlodipine dose if needed. Reduce the dose again if carbamazepine is withdrawn.
What to ask your pharmacist
- Should I take them at different times of day?
- Does the dose of either medicine need to change?
- Is there anything I should avoid, such as alcohol or certain foods, while on both?
