Summary
Amlodipine is a weak CYP3A4 inhibitor and may modestly raise flibanserin exposure. The effect is generally small with a single weak inhibitor, but flibanserin can cause hypotension, syncope and sedation, and amlodipine adds its own blood pressure lowering effect.
What this interaction means in plain words
Amlodipine and Flibanserin can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.
Amlodipine belongs to Cardiovascular; Flibanserin belongs to Genitourinary.
Why it happens
Weak inhibition of CYP3A4-mediated flibanserin metabolism, plus additive hypotensive effects.
What to do
Monitor blood pressure and for dizziness or syncope, especially when other CYP3A4 inhibitors are also taken. Advise the patient to avoid alcohol and to take flibanserin at bedtime.
What to ask your pharmacist
- Should I take them at different times of day?
- Does the dose of either medicine need to change?
- Is there anything I should avoid, such as alcohol or certain foods, while on both?
