Summary
Heparins, including low molecular weight heparins, can suppress aldosterone secretion and cause hyperkalemia. When combined with an ARB such as valsartan, which also reduces aldosterone effects, the risk is greater, especially in renal impairment or diabetes.
What this interaction means in plain words
Amlodipine-hydrochlorothiazide-valsartan and Dalteparin can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.
Amlodipine-hydrochlorothiazide-valsartan belongs to Cardiovascular; Dalteparin belongs to Cardiovascular.
Why it happens
Heparin-induced inhibition of adrenal aldosterone synthesis adds to angiotensin receptor blockade, reducing renal potassium excretion.
What to do
Monitor serum potassium and creatinine, particularly with prolonged dalteparin use or reduced renal function. Treat hyperkalemia if it develops.
What to ask your pharmacist
- Should I take them at different times of day?
- Does the dose of either medicine need to change?
