Summary

Barbiturates are enzyme inducers and could theoretically lower argatroban exposure. Argatroban is cleared mainly by hepatic metabolism, but CYP3A4/5 contributes only a minor share, and it is given by titrated infusion monitored with aPTT. Clinically meaningful loss of anticoagulation is unlikely.

What this interaction means in plain words

Amobarbital and Argatroban have a small, usually unimportant interaction. Most people can take both; the pharmacist may still mention it so that any unexpected effect is recognised.

Amobarbital belongs to Central Nervous System; Argatroban belongs to Cardiovascular.

Evidence level: Low

Why it happens

Possible induction of hepatic CYP3A4/5 by amobarbital, which is a minor elimination pathway for argatroban.

What to do

No empirical dose change is needed; titrate argatroban to aPTT as usual and reassess if anticoagulation response is unexpectedly low.
