Summary

Amobarbital is a barbiturate that adds substantially to the sedative effect of metaxalone. As a CYP3A4 inducer, it may also lower metaxalone exposure and reduce its muscle relaxant benefit.

What this interaction means in plain words

Amobarbital and Metaxalone can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.

Amobarbital belongs to Central Nervous System; Metaxalone belongs to Musculoskeletal.

Evidence level: Moderate

Why it happens

Additive CNS depression plus induction of hepatic CYP3A4 metabolism of metaxalone by the barbiturate.

What to do

Monitor for excessive sedation and respiratory depression, and assess whether metaxalone is still effective. Adjust doses or consider an alternative if either problem occurs.

What to ask your pharmacist

  • Should I take them at different times of day?
  • Does the dose of either medicine need to change?
  • Is there anything I should avoid, such as alcohol or certain foods, while on both?
