Summary
Amphetamine promotes release of norepinephrine and other catecholamines, and epinephrine directly stimulates adrenergic receptors. Together they can add to increases in heart rate and blood pressure and raise the risk of arrhythmia. Systemic exposure from inhaled epinephrine is usually low, so the effect is usually modest.
What this interaction means in plain words
Amphetamine and Epinephrine inhaled can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.
Why it happens
Additive sympathomimetic pharmacodynamic effects through indirect (amphetamine) and direct (epinephrine) adrenergic stimulation.
What to do
Monitor heart rate and blood pressure, especially when starting treatment or when epinephrine is used repeatedly. Limit epinephrine dosing to the recommended amount and review patients with cardiovascular disease.
