Summary
Both drugs can injure the kidney, and giving them together may add to the risk of renal impairment. Reduced kidney function can in turn raise tenofovir exposure and worsen tubular toxicity. The liposomal formulation is generally less nephrotoxic than conventional amphotericin B.
What this interaction means in plain words
Amphotericin b liposomal and Tenofovir disoproxil can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.
Why it happens
Additive nephrotoxicity, with reduced renal clearance of tenofovir when kidney function declines.
What to do
Monitor serum creatinine, estimated creatinine clearance, phosphate and electrolytes regularly during combined use. Adjust the tenofovir interval for renal function or choose an alternative if renal function falls.
What to ask your pharmacist
- Should I take them at different times of day?
- Does the dose of either medicine need to change?
- Is there anything I should avoid, such as alcohol or certain foods, while on both?
