Summary

Both salbutamol (particularly at high or nebulised doses, via hypokalemia and tachycardia) and apomorphine can prolong the QT interval. Combined use may increase the risk of ventricular arrhythmias, especially in patients with cardiac disease or electrolyte disturbances.

What this interaction means in plain words

Apomorphine and Salbutamol can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.

Apomorphine belongs to Central Nervous System; Salbutamol belongs to Respiratory.

Evidence level: Low

Why it happens

Additive QT prolongation, with salbutamol-induced hypokalemia further increasing arrhythmia susceptibility.

What to do

Check potassium and magnesium and correct deficits; consider ECG monitoring in patients with cardiac risk factors or when high-dose salbutamol is needed.

What to ask your pharmacist

  • Should I take them at different times of day?
  • Does the dose of either medicine need to change?
  • Is there anything I should avoid, such as alcohol or certain foods, while on both?
