What this interaction means in plain words

Bacitracin and Oxaliplatin can interact in a way that may be serious. Using them together is sometimes necessary, but it needs a deliberate decision by the prescriber, a plan for monitoring, and clear advice on the warning signs to watch for.

Bacitracin belongs to Miscellaneous; Oxaliplatin belongs to Oncology.

Evidence level: Low

Why it happens

Additive nephrotoxicity with reduced oxaliplatin clearance.

What to do

Avoid systemic bacitracin during oxaliplatin therapy and select another antibiotic. If unavoidable, monitor creatinine closely and adjust oxaliplatin dosing.

What to ask your pharmacist

  • Does the benefit of taking both outweigh the risk in my case?
