Drug interactions
Betamethasone + Hydrochlorothiazide
For healthcare professionals — reference only. This page is a brief summary, not medical advice and not a substitute for official labeling or clinical judgement. Always verify before prescribing or dispensing.
Overview
Additive potassium loss increases risk of hypokalemia and metabolic alkalosis; corticosteroids may blunt diuretic/antihypertensive effect via sodium and water retention; arrhythmia risk increases when hypokalemia occurs.
Mechanism of action
Pharmacodynamic additivity: thiazides increase distal sodium delivery causing renal K+ wasting; glucocorticoids exert mineralocorticoid effects promoting further K+ loss and fluid retention.
Clinical management
Monitor serum K+ and Mg2+ at baseline and periodically; consider potassium supplementation or a potassium-sparing agent; monitor BP, edema, and glycemia; adjust doses as needed.
