Summary
Ibuprofen can reduce the diuretic and natriuretic effect of bumetanide and cause fluid retention. In patients with heart failure, cirrhosis or kidney disease, the combination also raises the risk of acute kidney injury.
What this interaction means in plain words
Bumetanide and Ibuprofen can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.
Bumetanide belongs to Cardiovascular; Ibuprofen belongs to Musculoskeletal.
Why it happens
NSAID inhibition of renal prostaglandins reduces renal blood flow and sodium excretion, opposing loop diuretic action.
What to do
Monitor weight, edema, blood pressure and renal function, and increase the diuretic dose if response is blunted. Use the lowest effective ibuprofen dose for the shortest time.
What to ask your pharmacist
