Summary
Calcium carbonate may reduce captopril absorption and lessen its blood pressure effect. Calcium supplements together with thiazides can also raise serum calcium by reducing urinary calcium excretion, with a risk of hypercalcemia.
What this interaction means in plain words
Calcium carbonate and Captopril-hydrochlorothiazide can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.
Calcium carbonate belongs to Gastrointestinal Tract; Captopril-hydrochlorothiazide belongs to Cardiovascular.
Why it happens
Reduced captopril absorption from antacid effect, and reduced renal calcium excretion by thiazides.
What to do
Separate calcium carbonate from captopril by at least 2 hours. Monitor serum calcium in patients on regular high-dose calcium with the thiazide.
What to ask your pharmacist
