Summary
Calcium-containing antacids may slightly reduce absorption of fosinopril, which could weaken its effect. Thiazides also reduce urinary calcium excretion, so high calcium intake may raise serum calcium, especially with vitamin D or renal impairment.
What this interaction means in plain words
Calcium carbonate and Fosinopril-hydrochlorothiazide have a small, usually unimportant interaction. Most people can take both; the pharmacist may still mention it so that any unexpected effect is recognised.
Calcium carbonate belongs to Gastrointestinal Tract; Fosinopril-hydrochlorothiazide belongs to Cardiovascular.
Why it happens
Reduced fosinopril absorption by antacid binding, plus thiazide-reduced renal calcium excretion.
What to do
Separate fosinopril and calcium carbonate by at least 2 hours. Monitor serum calcium if high doses of calcium are used long term.
