Summary
Esmolol may add to the blood pressure lowering effect of candesartan and hydrochlorothiazide, causing hypotension or bradycardia. Beta-blockade can also slightly impair cellular potassium uptake, which together with an ARB may contribute to a modest rise in potassium.
What this interaction means in plain words
Candesartan-hydrochlorothiazide and Esmolol can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.
Candesartan-hydrochlorothiazide belongs to Cardiovascular; Esmolol belongs to Cardiovascular.
Why it happens
Additive antihypertensive effects, with minor beta-blocker impairment of cellular potassium uptake adding to ARB potassium retention.
What to do
Monitor blood pressure and heart rate closely during esmolol infusion in patients on this antihypertensive. Check potassium if renal function is impaired.
What to ask your pharmacist
- Should I take them at different times of day?
- Does the dose of either medicine need to change?
