Summary
Thiazide diuretics can worsen glucose tolerance and partially oppose the glucose-lowering effect of liraglutide. ARBs may slightly improve insulin sensitivity. Liraglutide-related vomiting or diarrhea may also cause volume depletion and kidney injury in patients on an ARB and diuretic.
What this interaction means in plain words
Candesartan-hydrochlorothiazide and Liraglutide have a small, usually unimportant interaction. Most people can take both; the pharmacist may still mention it so that any unexpected effect is recognised.
Candesartan-hydrochlorothiazide belongs to Cardiovascular; Liraglutide belongs to Endocrine.
Why it happens
Thiazide-induced reduction in insulin sensitivity and secretion opposes incretin effects, while GI fluid loss from liraglutide adds to diuretic and ARB renal risk.
What to do
Monitor glycemic control when starting or changing the thiazide dose. Advise adequate hydration and check renal function if GI symptoms occur.
