Summary

Both drugs depress the central nervous system, so sedation and psychomotor impairment may be greater than with either alone. Meperidine is also serotonergic, and antipsychotics with serotonin receptor activity may add to the risk of serotonin toxicity. Dopamine blockade may rarely contribute to neuroleptic malignant syndrome.

What this interaction means in plain words

Cariprazine and Meperidine can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.

Cariprazine belongs to Central Nervous System; Meperidine belongs to Musculoskeletal.

Evidence level: Low

Why it happens

Additive CNS depression plus overlapping serotonergic and dopaminergic effects.

What to do

Start with lower doses and monitor for excess sedation, respiratory depression, and signs of serotonin toxicity such as agitation, clonus, and hyperthermia. Stop the drugs and treat if rigidity or fever develops.

What to ask your pharmacist
