Summary
Loop diuretics can cause volume depletion and reduced renal perfusion, which may impair clearance of cefepime. Accumulated cefepime increases the risk of neurotoxicity such as encephalopathy and seizures, and reports of direct additive nephrotoxicity are inconsistent.
What this interaction means in plain words
Cefepime and Furosemide have a small, usually unimportant interaction. Most people can take both; the pharmacist may still mention it so that any unexpected effect is recognised.
Cefepime belongs to Anti Bacterial; Furosemide belongs to Cardiovascular.
Why it happens
Diuretic-induced volume depletion may reduce renal function and thus cefepime clearance; direct nephrotoxic synergy is not well established.
What to do
Monitor renal function and hydration status, and adjust the cefepime dose to creatinine clearance. Watch for altered mental status or myoclonus.
What to ask your pharmacist
- Is there anything I should notice while taking both?
- Do I need to tell my doctor at the next visit?
