Summary
NSAIDs can blunt the diuretic and natriuretic effects of loop diuretics and may reduce renal function, particularly in volume-depleted or elderly patients. This can reduce control of edema and hypertension and raise the risk of acute kidney injury.
What this interaction means in plain words
Celecoxib and Furosemide can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.
Celecoxib belongs to Musculoskeletal; Furosemide belongs to Cardiovascular.
Why it happens
NSAID inhibition of renal prostaglandins reduces renal blood flow and sodium excretion, opposing furosemide's action.
What to do
Monitor weight, blood pressure, edema and renal function, and increase the diuretic dose if response is diminished. Avoid dehydration and use the lowest celecoxib dose.
What to ask your pharmacist
- Should I take them at different times of day?
- Does the dose of either medicine need to change?
- Is there anything I should avoid, such as alcohol or certain foods, while on both?
