Summary

Etodolac inhibits platelet function and can cause GI ulceration, so when given with dalteparin the risk of bleeding is higher. Spinal or epidural hematoma risk is also increased with neuraxial procedures.

What this interaction means in plain words

Dalteparin and Etodolac can interact in a way that may be serious. Using them together is sometimes necessary, but it needs a deliberate decision by the prescriber, a plan for monitoring, and clear advice on the warning signs to watch for.

Dalteparin belongs to Cardiovascular; Etodolac belongs to Musculoskeletal.

Evidence level: High

Why it happens

Additive effects on hemostasis: NSAID platelet inhibition plus low molecular weight heparin anti-Xa activity.

What to do

Avoid the combination where possible and use a non-NSAID analgesic. If unavoidable, monitor hemoglobin and for bleeding, and follow neuraxial anesthesia precautions.
