Summary
Low molecular weight heparins can suppress adrenal aldosterone secretion and may cause hyperkalemia. With irbesartan, which also reduces potassium excretion, the risk increases, particularly in renal impairment or diabetes.
What this interaction means in plain words
Dalteparin and Irbesartan can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.
Dalteparin belongs to Cardiovascular; Irbesartan belongs to Cardiovascular.
Why it happens
Heparin-induced inhibition of aldosterone synthesis added to angiotensin receptor blockade, reducing renal potassium excretion.
What to do
Monitor serum potassium, especially with therapy beyond a few days or with renal impairment.
What to ask your pharmacist
- Should I take them at different times of day?
- Does the dose of either medicine need to change?
- Is there anything I should avoid, such as alcohol or certain foods, while on both?
