Summary

Corticosteroids can affect hemostasis in either direction and may also cause gastric mucosal injury and capillary fragility, which could heighten bleeding risk in patients on low molecular weight heparin. The effect is variable and not well quantified. Dalteparin is monitored by anti-Xa rather than INR.

What this interaction means in plain words

Dalteparin and Prednisone have a small, usually unimportant interaction. Most people can take both; the pharmacist may still mention it so that any unexpected effect is recognised.

Dalteparin belongs to Cardiovascular; Prednisone belongs to Endocrine.

Evidence level: Low

Why it happens

Mechanism is not firmly established; possible effects on vascular integrity and gastric mucosa add to heparin-related bleeding risk.

What to do

Monitor for signs of bleeding, particularly GI bleeding, and consider gastroprotection in high-risk patients. Check anti-Xa levels only in special populations such as renal impairment.
