Summary
Deflazacort is a corticosteroid and hydrochlorothiazide is a potassium-wasting diuretic, so combined use can cause additive hypokalemia. This is more relevant with long-term or high-dose steroid use and may also promote fluid retention that counteracts antihypertensive therapy.
What this interaction means in plain words
Deflazacort and Hydrochlorothiazide-irbesartan can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.
Deflazacort belongs to Miscellaneous; Hydrochlorothiazide-irbesartan belongs to Cardiovascular.
Why it happens
Additive renal potassium loss from thiazide-induced distal sodium delivery and corticosteroid mineralocorticoid activity.
What to do
Monitor serum potassium and blood pressure periodically and replace potassium as needed. The irbesartan component may partly offset potassium loss.
What to ask your pharmacist
- Should I take them at different times of day?
- Does the dose of either medicine need to change?
- Is there anything I should avoid, such as alcohol or certain foods, while on both?
