Summary
Corticosteroids can induce hepatic delta-aminolevulinic acid synthase and may counteract the biochemical benefit of hemin in acute porphyria. They may also be porphyrinogenic in susceptible patients.
What this interaction means in plain words
Dexamethasone-neomycin-polymyxin and Hemin can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.
Dexamethasone-neomycin-polymyxin belongs to Anti Bacterial; Hemin belongs to Miscellaneous.
Why it happens
Corticosteroids upregulate ALA synthase, opposing the hemin-mediated feedback suppression.
What to do
Avoid systemic dexamethasone during porphyria attacks when possible. Monitor porphyrin precursors and clinical response.
