Summary
Anticholinergics can complement levodopa in parkinsonism, but they may worsen dyskinesia and cause confusion or hallucinations in older patients. At higher doses they slow gastric emptying, which can delay or reduce levodopa absorption.
What this interaction means in plain words
Dicyclomine and Levodopa can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.
Dicyclomine belongs to Respiratory; Levodopa belongs to Central Nervous System.
Why it happens
Delayed gastric emptying reduces levodopa absorption, plus additive CNS anticholinergic effects.
What to do
Monitor motor response, dyskinesia and mental status; adjust levodopa timing or dose if the response becomes erratic.
What to ask your pharmacist
- Should I take them at different times of day?
- Does the dose of either medicine need to change?
- Is there anything I should avoid, such as alcohol or certain foods, while on both?
